St. Catharines is Niagara Region's largest city. It has the 6th largest urban area in Ontario, with 96.13 square kilometres of land. The city is located at the northern entrance of the Welland Canal, 51 kilometres south of Toronto across Lake Ontario. St. Catharines is known as 'The Garden City' for its 1000 acres of lush greenery, gardens, parks and trails. The outdoor beauty of the Niagara Escarpment runs right through the city.
There is no shortage of opportunities for hiking, walking, running, rollerblading and cross-country skiing. St. Catharines boasts a trail network of over 90 km including the Bruce Trail, Short Hills Provincial Park, Welland Canal and other local pathways.
If you're a boater or enjoy water activities, St. Catharines has it all. Port Dalhousie in the north part of the city is home to one of the most popular marinas and beach on the south shore of Lake Ontario. It is also home to Martindale Pond where you can row, kayak or fish.
The city has a variety of museums, art galleries, theatres, great shopping and excellent restaurants. There are over 50 wineries under a 30-minute drive. Some are located within the city.
