      Known as the city “Where Ships Climb the Mountain”,  Locks 4 through 7 of the Welland Canal are located in Thorold.  You can watch ships climb up the Niagara Escarpment to the highest point of the Welland Canal which is 350 ft above sea level.  

      Thorold is an ideal spot for sports and family fun. Attractions include historical sites, nature trails, parks and playgrounds. The Welland Canal, which passes through the city has a paved recreational trail. Hiking, fishing, mountain biking and horse riding are available nearby at Short Hills Provincial Park.
